Text and Textile (online)

We often think of our lives – and of stories we read – as threads spun, knitted or interwoven with others into the fabric of texts. This course will explore the ties of text and textile through the study of both classic and modern works in Hebrew and English literature including S.A. Agnon, Nikolay Gogol, Susan Glaspell, and the myths of Greek mythology. It will focus on the many instances in which for women the needle served as a substitute for the pen.The literary study will be accompanied by exercises in practical embroidery stitches and techniques. We will occupy our minds with stories and poems, and our hands with thread and cloth (optional).

This course will be given in English.
Dr. Esther Horovitz, Lecturer in Literature at Herzog College, will be teaching this innovative course
on Thursday mornings from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Israel time (12 meetings) as a live online class, recorded for later viewing at your convenience.
